Trouble Shooting > Transmission Noise

Symptom: Transmission Rattles and Clunks

Automatic: Transmission vibrates during gear changes, thuds when put into gear, noise when placed in four wheel drive. Start by checking your transmission fluid. Make sure it is filled to the level specified in your vehicle manual. If the noise continues call our service manager.

Manual: Transmission makes a thudding noise when you change gears. Or, you hear a metallic grinding noise as you shift gears even though you fully press down the clutch pedal.

Possible Cause:

Automatic: If corrected quickly, transmission noises can be repaired with minor adjustments or work. On the other hand, if left unresolved, noises may result in serious damage. Call our service manager (408) 492-8980 for more information.

  • Transmission fluid level is low or wrong type
  • Dirty or contaminated fluid
  • Shift linkage needs adjustment
  • Internal hard part damage
  • Faulty torque converter

Manual: Clutch slipping will cause clutch surface damage. If not repaired, slipping will instigate a major transmission malfunction. For more information, Call our service manager at (408) 492-8980.
